How did we get from killing vampires and thinking that they were evil to loving them?

How did we arrive at the Twilight vampires? Vampires and werewolves used to be see as scary creatures, now they are sexy??? I mean I loved New Moon and thought Jacob and Edward were totally sexy but what made movie producers and authors think to make vampire like that and not like how they used to be?? and don't say creative things!
