I would start off by brainstorming characters, setting, and i think a murder/ robbery mystery would be easy to write about because the suspect would have a clear objective. so start of by describing where the mystery started only don't give away character names. You CANNOT be vague the reader needs to know what has happened. Then in the next chapter talk about the detective and maybe have him/her have a conversation with his/her boss/colleague/friend about the mystery. Then as the story developes let the detective find clues, hints, secret messages, etc. A great series to get info out of would be the Nancy Drew series. They might be a little childish, but i don't think your teacher will expect you to write a mystery equal to those of Sherlock Homes.
