What is the audiobook content workflow?

I am curious about the business workfow of audiobook production. Let's say I want to produce audio version of book X, currently in copyright. Do I go to the author? The publisher? Some intermediary? What kind of contract needs to be made? Thanks!

Without having 1st hand knowledge of this process, I jwould say that a 1st approach would have to be to the publisher. This is the source of the current copyright. They would have a direct connection to the author, whereas a lay citizen does not have this connection.
